February is that time of year when all of Highlands celebrates the joy of reading!!
Here is a list of the many fun, literacy activities and events Highlands students, teachers, and families can enjoy this month... Get Your Paws on a Good Book &READ!!
Are you ready to get your paws on some good books? Highlands’ Scholastic Book Fair is only 1 week away!! This week-long fundraising event would not be paws-ible without our community support. Our thanks to those of you who have already signed up to help! If you would like to lend a paw, Volunteers Are Still Needed - shifts range from 30 minutes to an hour, during and after school.
On Monday & Tuesday, classes will be visiting the Book Fair for a special sneak preview before the Fair opens. Students will have a chance to create Wishlists to take home and share with their families. We are looking for parent volunteers to assist students as they explore and record their favorite books. If you are able to lend a paw for Classroom Previews, please check the Class Preview Schedule to sign up at: http://bit.ly/2018classpreview

The San Mateo-Foster City Education Foundation is pleased to announce their district-wide Read-a-Thon, from February 26 – March 9. In this week's Thursday Envelope, please look for a parent letter about the program, and a flyer with your student's secret code to activate their Read-a-thon page.
Please take a moment to read the letter and set up your student's personal reading page at http://www.read-a-thon.com/readers/. There is a free prize just for activating their account!
After our kick-off on Monday, February 26, encourage your student to read and set their online timer. Please send sponsor requests via text, email and Facebook (all optional) to family and close friends. Donations are easy to complete online.
Students earn 15% back from donations as “RAT Bucks” that they can use to purchase prizes in the Read-a-thon web store. The Education Foundation earns 75% of all online donations (Read-a-thon takes 10% for administration and payment processing). Donors who would rather contribute directly to the Ed Foundation may do so at www.smfcedfund.org.
All proceeds from the Read-a-Thon will go toward TK-5th grade music instruction across our school district. Thank you very much for your support!

Join in the fun at our 15th biennial Walk-A-Jog fundraiser and the End-of-Year Family Festival!
For this year’s event, students will raise precious funds which support a wide range of programs at Highlands, including the arts, technology, physical education, assemblies, and academic support programs.
The course will be running up and down Lexington Avenue with the Festival taking place at the Highlands Recreation center, 1851 Lexington Avenue. The races for Grades TK through 5th will be held from 9:15 to 11:00am. Registration for the kids’ race starts at 8:30am.
There will be great prizes for the top student fund raiser and for the boy and girl students in each grade who finish first.
We invite all students to participate and all families to come cheer on the participants. The End-of-Year Family Festival will include fun and festivities for the entire family including bounce houses, great food and many more events to be announced!
This year we will also be running a 5K Adult Fun Run beginning at 8 AM!
We are in the process of streamlining communications at Highlands and we have some exciting changes in the works! Starting this month, we will be moving to a once-a-month Thursday envelope flyer, featuring the school calendar on one side and event-related flyers on the backside. We are striving to reduce the amount of paperwork going back home and this is one step in that direction! For critical flyers or paper work, we will ensure that you will receive a printed copy of that, but for the most part, the monthly calendar/event flyer will be your source of information.
Weekly newsletters will continue to be sent through Membership Toolkit. Know of a Highlands family who is not in the loop? Please forward this email or ask them to sign up for weekly communications at http://highlands-pta.com!
