UPDATES & VOLUNTEERING
Hearts, Lungs, and Poop! Oh My!
Thanks to the incredible energy of the 5th grade teacher team (Marje Learned, Stephanie McClymond, and Stephanie Moran), the generosity of the Highlands PTA, and the Science in Action! Program, all of the 5th grade students spent the week studying body systems. For the first time ever, working in small groups of 3, each group was able to dissect their own sheep heart, sheep lungs, and simulate the digestive system using a nylon stocking. There was much EWWing!! and WHOAing!! It was a wonderful hands-on learning experience for the students to understand what is inside their own bodies and how all of the organs function.
Much thanks for the support of the in class helpers: Dr. Rachael Webster, Dr. Angelica Vargas-Prada, Rachel Jordan, and Allison Hasenkamp.
