We are so excited to be back at school with your children. Students were excited to meet their teachers, and teachers worked hard to be ready for them. The energy of the school is a good one. We have accomplished much in these few days, students met new friends, teachers started their curriculum, we practiced a fire drill evacuation, had our first Bear Shirt Friday, and welcomed everyone back with an assembly. Even our Highland’s bear was there! Thank you parents for proceeding with caution around the school. The drop off areas have been running smoothly so far. Thank you for continuing safe practices and keeping the loading zone flowing.
We also are in the process of a new pattern of dismissal from 2:36 to 3:06 p.m. If you are not with your child, or waiting for an older sibling, please exit the school at 2:36 p.m. We are still in session with 200 students until 3:06 p.m. and need to maintain safety standards. A letter went home to explain the reasoning and asking for your cooperation and support. Unattended students will be asked to go home or to the office. All parents have been asked to wait for their older children in the Kinder structure area, until 3:06 p.m. Thank you again for your support in keeping our students safe.
We have a “Name the Bear” contest running through the end of the month. Our mascot needs a name to put a smile on his/her face. Please brainstorm with your child what names might be used to enter the contest. There is a prize associated and bragging rights! ☺
Our students have done a wonderful job at lunch, on the grass, while our construction is going on. Having the whole school eating and playing at the same time is showing us how caring the older students are of our younger ones. It is a good feeling to see older students help our younger ones open their juice cartons, thermos, or even their packets of ketchup. We are lucky to have such caring students because of you. Thank you parents!
I am so excited to start this year with your children and look forward to many exciting days watching the wonder in their eyes. We look forward to seeing you at Back to School Night on August 29th.

WE GIVE BECAUSE WHILE A PUBLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION IS FREE, AN ENRICHED EDUCATION IS NOT
We have chosen Highlands Elementary School because we want the best public school education for our children. Contributions to the Highland’s SMART Fund are used entirely to support enrichment programs and services for our students.
SMART represents the primary focus areas of Highlands PTA’s fundraising efforts: Science, Math, Art, Reading and Technology. These areas are our primary focus, but we also fund other activities to help support the whole child. The SMART Fund is managed in conjunction with other fundraising efforts by the Highlands Elementary School PTA.
Please donate to support these Highlands SMART fund and our children. Everyone can help and make a difference, and we are striving for 100% participation from our parent community.
Together, with everyone’s help, we can continue to support these important Highlands Elementary programs. Any questions please email Missy Palala at firstname.lastname@example.org
ROOM PARENTS NEEDED
If you’re interested in being a room parent this year, we still need room parents for the following classes:
TK/K: Ms. Murray
3rd Grade: Ms. Gervang
4th Grade: Ms. Phipps, Mr. Perry
Room parent orientation will be held on Thursday 6 September at 6pm in the LGI. Please attend even if you are a returning room parent as there might be new ways we will be addressing old issues and you might also be able to contribute your experiences to the new volunteers.
GIFT WRAP FUNDRAISER BEGINS THURSDAY!
Highlands has partnered with Charleston Wrap to help raise much-needed funds by selling gift wrap, home and kitchen items, chocolates and other gifts.
Highlands Elementary receives 50% for each item sold, to support important PTA programs such as Computer Technology, Art, Music, Science and much more! Our goal is $35,000 in sales.
Please look in this week's Thursday Envelope for an informational letter, catalogs and order form. We encourage ALL families to participate by sharing or emailing the catalogs or with friends, relatives, neighbors and co-workers.
Collect Box Tops! It's super easy and a great way for our school to receive extra money! Last year, those colorful Box Tops raised over $575 for our Highlands SMART Fund which goes to PTA funded programs like Art in Action, Music, Lunchtime Enrichment, Garden, Science and so much more! The first collection date will be in September!
